A UH-1J military helicopter of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) made a forced landing at the Tachikawa air base on 21 June.
According to Scramble Magazine, the crew of the UH-1J escaped unharmed, but the venerable Huey suffered serious damage.
The UH-1J (UH-1Hs built by Fuji in Japan for the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force), assigned to the Eastern Army Aviation Group, was forced to land at 9:57 am during training at Tachikawa Camp, said the spokesman.
The two crew members of the downed helicopter were not injured in the accident, which broke the plane in half, the spokesman said.
An aerial photograph of the accident site published by the Yomiuri Shimbun shows the tail of the helicopter separated from its cabin.
The Japanese military is investigating the accident, the spokesman said.
