Man in a Wheelchair Climbed More than 250 Meters up a Skyscraper in Hong Kong [VIDEO]

He suffered a car accident more than 10 years ago, but that did not stop him from continuing his passion.

Lai Chiwai is the first paraplegic to climb more than 250 meters from a skyscraper in Hong Kong, China, while strapped to a wheelchair.

The ascent lasted more than ten hours for the purpose of raising funds for spinal cord patients.

The objective was to ascend to the top floor of Torres Nina at 300 meters, but due to safety reasons the mountaineer reached 250 meters.

“He was quite scared,” Lai told Reuters. “When climbing a mountain, I can hold onto rocks or small holes, but with glass, all I can really trust is the rope I’m hanging from,” he added.

Chi-wai, 37, was in a car accident 10 years ago that left him paralyzed from the waist down, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his passion for climbing. He climbed mountains again by attaching his wheelchair to a pulley system.

Five years ago, he climbed the 495-meter-high Lion Rock Mountain, a symbol of local popular culture of strength and courage in Hong Kong.

Before the accident, Lai Chiwai was crowned the Asian rock climbing champion four times and at one point was the eighth best climber in the world.

“Some people think that people with disabilities are always weak and we need help, assistance and human mercy. I want to tell everyone that they don’t have to think that way,” he said.

The mountaineer’s feat left $670,000 in donations.
