A Su-27 fighter plane was alerted on Monday to intercept Swedish and American reconnaissance aircraft near the Russian border over the Baltic Sea where NATO is conducting drills, and escorted the planes to avoid the violation of the state’s border. Russia, the Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday.
“On June 10, the means of control of Russia’s airspace over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea detected two aerial targets approaching Russia’s state border. A Su-27 fighter aircraft of the Baltic Fleet Air Defense Forces hastened to intercept the targets,” the statement said.
The Russian fighter plane’s crew approached the air targets at a safe distance and identified them as the US RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft. UU and the Swedish Gulfstream.
The NATO naval exercises Baltops-2019 take place from 9 to 21 June in the southern part of the Baltic Sea. Around 40 ships and submarines, and 40 aircraft from 18 countries will participate in the military exercise.
